Lucy Aird graduated with a first class honours in Ceramics at UWE. Tutored by some of the finest ceramicists of their generation; Mo Jupp, Walter Keeler, Nicholas Homoky and Kevin De Choisy. Lucy specialised in sculpting, applying her own bespoke photographic screen-printed transfers using re-touched imagery. After a long break from ceramics, focussing on a career in graphic design, Lucy returned to ceramics over a decade ago.
Lucy's latest work is making hand-thrown forms on the potters wheel. Having
received specialist training by the highly-skilled porcelain potter, Romily Graham. Lucy is currently based in East London, producing work in studios in Finsbury Park and Walthamstow.
The current collection of work is based on the beautiful droplet and ovoid forms that Lucy was obsessed with making during her college years, using hand-building sculpture techniques. She now creates this forms by throwing on the wheel; mainly for the challenge. Also because the momentum of the wheel helps shapes the pieces, giving more variety and freedom when she makes. Each vessel is subtly different in form and many hours are devoted to trimming the thrown pieces to add further refinement and clarity to the profile.
The surface effects are key to bringing out the very best in the form, the smoke-fired pieces have a softness and warmth to them, and are very tactile to hold. This firing process gives the work a tonally-rich and textured effect, giving a meditative quality.
Lucy's parents are serious collectors of the arts and crafts, and this ever-growing collection has long inspired Lucy and informed her craft. They are extremely supportive, and very artistic and creative in their own right.
